Lucas: Step one.

I'm trying something a little different this time. Usually I start a painting by doing a few preliminary sketches. Once I get one that works I'll transfer it to my support and go from there. No sketches this time. I'm trying to go a bit outside of my comfort zone by just diving right in. Hopefully i'll be able to correct some of the mistakes in the drawing when I start laying in the paint.

  1. ... and is this a charcoal sketch, or is this an oil/turp sketch/underpainting?

  2. Charcoal on hardboard.

You are a better subject than you think.

I have an idea for the palette I might use. Think Fight Club. You know... Stuff looks right (sort of) but there's this tinge of sickly green to everything that makes you feel a little uneasy.

The hand and your right cheek look a little weird but once I get some paint in there you'll see what I'm going for.

  3. Perhaps this will become a series, "Noteworthy Beards"

  4. I would like to do a photo project of the same thing. I have dubbed 2009 "The Year of the Beard" because so many people have crazy beards!
